Trinamool, SP announce support for AAP in Delhi election; Congress sidelined!

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have both extended their support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. The Election Commission has set the election date for February 5, 2025, with results to be declared on February 8, 2025. This announcement has set the stage for a high-stakes election, with the AAP, BJP, and Congress all vying for dominance in the capital.

AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his gratitude to TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee for her party’s support. Kejriwal emphasized that Banerjee had consistently supported AAP through both good and challenging times. He also thanked Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for his continued backing, noting the important role of regional parties in bolstering AAP's position. Both TMC and SP have confirmed that they will stand by AAP in the Delhi polls, signaling a strengthened alliance among opposition parties in the national capital.

The AAP's decision to go into the Delhi Assembly elections independently comes despite its ongoing alliance with the Congress for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While Congress has been in alliance with AAP at the national level, it has decided to contest the Delhi Assembly polls on its own. This decision reflects the changing political dynamics in the region as AAP seeks to maintain its political footing.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), led by Mayawati, has also confirmed that it will contest the Delhi elections independently. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, BSP contested all 70 seats but failed to win any, securing just 0.71% of the vote share. Despite this, the BSP is once again fielding candidates across the capital in the 2025 elections. This marks a contrast to the AAP’s alliances with TMC and SP and adds a new layer of competition in the already fragmented political environment.

The Delhi Assembly election will be a critical test for the AAP, which has won the previous two elections in 2015 and 2020 by landslide margins, securing 67 and 62 seats, respectively. The party faces strong competition from the BJP, which has been active in its criticism of AAP's governance and its handling of local issues. The Congress, after years of dominance in Delhi, will be contesting independently in the 2025 elections, marking a departure from previous alliances with AAP. The upcoming elections are expected to be a crucial showdown between the AAP, BJP, and Congress, with regional parties like TMC, SP, and BSP playing an influential role.
